The ink used by Volta in his scripts appears to be a very complex mixture. Our analysis of the eluates from EVA diskettes (via GCXGC/TOFMS) has revealed presence more than 1800 unique metabolites. thus combination different ingredients, mainly consisting tannins, vegetable oils and resins together with root wood dyes. In particular, hydroxy dihydroxyanthraquinones, as well natural quinoids, evidenced use madder dyes Rubiaceae an important component this ink. Natural based on 9, 10-anthraquinone skeleton, hydroquinone anthrone derivatives, even specific marker alizarin, indicate Rubia tinctorum. Additionally, several signals fatty acids, saturated unsaturated mono dicarboxylic typical Pinaceae substantiated oil colophony. Several cyclic monosaccharides suggested also gum (Acacia Senegal known Arabic gum). It is that gum, linseed oil, were often employed thickeners increase viscosity protect it excess absorption atmospheric oxygen. Curiously, we found characteristic alkaloids such Dioncophyllin A B, metabolites tropical/exotic plants Triphyophyllum, Habropeltatum Dioncophyllum.
